If you have experience in the HVAC field, you can petition to waive the prerequisite of HVAC 101 and enroll directly into HVAC 102. Experience can include HVAC industry certifications (such as NATE or HVAC Excellence) or documented work experience as an HVAC technician. To challenge the HVAC 101 prerequisite course, we strongly suggest that you meet with a counselor who can help you through the process. If you would prefer to do this on your own, you must complete the following:
1. Enroll at Santa Rosa Junior College (if you have already enrolled, skip to the next step).
2. Complete and file a Prerequisite/Corequisite Challenge Form, following the steps below:
a. For the first question ("Are you attempting to challenge a course using an Advanced Placement (AP) score(s) or equivalent completed college coursework?") select NO
b. For the second question ("Are you are attempting to challenge a course that is in progress at another institution OR a course that is not an approved prerequisite course, such has High School Chemistry, In-progress High School Foreign Language coursework, OR other non-equivalent completed coursework?") select YES
c. You will be filing the form based on option 4 of those given: "(4) The student has the knowledge or ability to succeed in the course or program despite not meeting the prerequisite or corequisite."
3. Complete the form. You will need to use your full legal name and input your student ID number
a. For "Course I want to enroll in" put HVAC 102
b. For "SRJC Prerequisite(s) or Corequisite(s) I Wish To Challenge" put HVAC 101
c. Under "I petition to challenge a prerequisite/corequisite based on one of the following" select the first option ("Knowledge or ability to succeed")
d. Write a brief explanation - this can include your industry certifications or existing work in the HVAC field.
e. You will need supporting evidence. For example, if you list any industry certifications, you will need to be prepared to upload a copy of that certification. If you are listing work experience, you could upload your resume, a letter of recommendation from an employer, or just a Word document that matches your brief explanation from the previous step. Note: you may attach up to 3 pieces of supporting documentation, but must include at least one.
f. Enter your signature, following the directions given on the form
g. Click on "submit"
Challenges will be reviewed by the Industrial and Trade Technology Department chair. The Department Chair will inform the Admissions & Records Office if the challenge is approved or denied. You will then be notified via email if your challenge was successful. It is then your responsibility to enroll in the course.
Please be aware that:
• It is your responsibility, as the student, to provide evidence to support the challenge. If you have questions or need assistance, discuss with your counselor prior to filing.
• Filing a challenge does not guarantee a seat in the course.
