Abolition April & Sexual Assault Awareness Month: Your Abuser Has Keys to Your Cell: Queer Resource Center Santa Rosa and Petaluma campus are honored to have Katie "KD" Dixon for a presentation for Abolition April and Sexual Assault Awareness Month.  This will be on Tuesday, April 2nd from 12-1:30 PM.  Attend in person at Santa Rosa Campus QRC in Pioneer Hall or at Our House (Jacobs 116 Petaluma Campus) for a watch party.

We are on the verge of a national scandal. Have you seen the headlines?

In response to ongoing reports of sexual abuse by prison staff, the Solidarity Committee for Incarcerated Survivors was formed in December 2022 by Sister Warriors Freedom Coalition, California Coalition for Women Prisoners, Survived & Punished CA, and UnCommon Law. Following lawsuits, media coverage, and a briefing at the State Capitol about this abuse, the California Budget Act of 2023 created the opportunity for advocates to form a response and prevention working group to address this rampant sexual violence.

Come learn more about the ongoing effort to expose and stop the sexual violence people inside of America's carceral institution.

Update: Presentation with Katie "KD" Dixon will now be held on Tuesday, April 9 from 12-1:30 PM.

Registration: Closed

KamilOshundara

Join us Monday October 23 from 12-1:30 PM at Our House Jacobs 116, Petaluma (Zoom option also available).

Kamil Oshundara (they/them) is a Black, trans, multi-disciplinary artist, writer and filmmaker. Kamil is also a practitioner of the Yoruba Ifa tradition. They’ve been initiated for a decade and have served as an Olorisha (priest) of Shango for over 7 years. As a filmmaker that focuses on horror, sci-fi, and fantasy, Kamil works to elevate the representation of African, indigenous traditions and produces narratives that re-imagine queerness through an ancestrally informed, genre lens. They can be found on social media @k6mil.

A week before Halloween, Kamil will guide us through a virtual presentation that will provide BIPOC and gender expansive students with personal strategies for asserting, healing and exploring oneself amid transition. In this session, Kamil shares private experiences with top surgery and receiving gender affirming care alongside transitioning with family, navigating loss and spirituality as a non-binary artist. During the first hour, Kamil traces personal experiences while providing helpful proverbs and practices; the final 30 minutes are reserved for a live Q&A. Lastly, Kamil will offer a public prayer and offering to their altar in honor of the trans-cestors, vulnerable youth and queer lives lost to state violence.

Why Fashion Inclusivity Matters  A conversation with HauteButch founders Karen Roberts and Danette Sheppard-Vaugh

Tuesday, March 28th from 12-1pm via Zoom and Our House. Lunch will be provided for in-person attendees.

Join us to hear the stories of Karen Roberts and Danette Sheppard-Vaughn, the founders of the clothing label HauteButch. This local clothing company is a queer black-owned brand, founded in 2012 by Karen Roberts & Danette Sheppard-Vaughn in an effort to solve a problem that’s existed in the fashion industry since its birth – creating masculine clothing tailored to fit women’s bodies. Being a masculine woman herself, Karen has a unique and personal understanding of the struggles many queer individuals face when searching for clothing to fit not only their sense of style, but their bodies as well.

Karen and Danette will share the story of how they got started, and how students can launch into the design industry. For more information about this event, email Ri Bussey, Queer Resources, at abussey@santarosa.edu
