SRJC Petaluma in full bloom - in more ways than one!
An early spring at SRJC Petaluma means beautiful blossoms on the campus trees and a great line-up of events are in store for the campus!
Spring 2020 Welcome Week a Success!
This semester’s slate of Welcome Week events, designed by our Student Government Vice President of Student Life, Meea McMath, kicked off the week with an evening showing on January 27th, of “The Duff” in the Carole L. Ellis Auditorium with snacks provided outside for evening students as they headed to class. This was followed up the next day by the Student Services Fair held in the lobby of the Richard Call Building where 195 students enjoyed a pizza lunch, connected to great resources on campus. Welcome Week closed out with a climbing wall in the parking lot behind the Call Building and a barbecue in Rotary Plaza for Club Day! 196 students enjoyed the barbecue, breaking records for attendance at Welcome Week over the past few years. A huge thank you to all of the staff who helped put this event together! Welcome Week will be back in Fall 2020. See you there!
Gateway to College Partners with Social Advocates for Youth
There are two new mental health clinicians in the extended Gateway to College (GtC) student support program, Hilary Halper and Bethany Theodore. Hilary and Bethany are school-based mental health clinicians from Social Advocates for Youth (SAY), a community based organization primarily serving Santa Rosa transitional youth. Through the Comprehensive Support & Improvement (K-12) funding, GtC is the first Petaluma high school to partner with SAY, and serve SRJC’s middle college high school students. SAY is co-located in the GtC program area four half-days per week, with a combined caseload of nearly 20 students. Welcome Hilary and Bethany, we are grateful to have your support!
Throwdown Thursday Game Night
The first Throwdown Thursday Game Night of the semester was held on January 30th where seven students battled to be this semester’s Super Smash Ultimate Champion! Luis emerged as the winner, with previous champion Jordan taking second place. The next Throwdown Thursday Game Night will take place on Thursday, March 26 with students racing to the finish line in Mario Kart!
This is Black Jeopardy!
Oakland-based poet and cultural geographer Teju Adisa Farrar gave an intriguing presentation titled “Black Futures: On Mermaids, Resilient Interventions, and Environmental Catharsis” for students in Dr. John Stover’s Race and Ethnic Relations sociology class, who gathered in Our House Intercultural Center during Black History Month. She ended the experience with a fun session of “Black Jeopardy,” inspired by the TV game show.
Financial Aid Awareness Workshops
February was Financial Aid Awareness Month! In partnership with the Student Success Team, Our House and the Petaluma Outreach Team, the Financial Aid office hosted two awesome workshops. On February 5th, the morning kicked off with a workshop in the Petaluma Student Success Center, PC 690 and finished the day with an evening workshop in Our House, PC 116. In addition to food and fun, students were able to work on both the 2019-2020 and the 2020-2021 Financial Aid Applications. Hands on assistance was available for everyone who needed it. A special thank you to everyone who came out to help SRJC Petaluma students navigate the Financial Aid application process!
AAUW Honors an SRJC Petaluma Student!
SRJC Petaluma’s very own Amy Granados was selected as this year’s American Association of University Women (AAUW Petaluma) Award for College Women in Leadership National Conference. As a recipient of this award, Amy will attend the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders Conference at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland from May 27 – May 30, 2020.
Every year hundreds of top college women join AAUW for three days of leadership training, inspiration, and networking. Now in its 33rd year, the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders brings together world-class speakers, top brands, and hundreds of passionate and inspired college women who are eager to become the leaders of tomorrow. With more than 10,000 attendees over the conference’s history, this is the premier leadership event for college women in the United States and globally.
Amy has been a Student Assistant in the First Stop Center for over a year, where she has assisted many students through the enrollment process. After just two years at SRJC, Amy will be graduating this spring and will be transferring this fall. She has not decided where she will be attending yet, but plans to major in Sociology.
Attending this year’s conference will be a great opportunity for Amy before she heads off to University. Congratulations Amy! We are proud of you and know that many wonderful adventures await you!
